Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i was among the mourners who gathered at Parliament Buildings on Friday morning to pay their last respects to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Matiang’i was captured warmly greeting Embakasi East MP Babu Owino and Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, drawing attention as the three exchanged quiet words and shared a somber moment at the Parliament.
The former CS, who served in President Uhuru Kenyatta’s administration, has long been perceived as one of Raila’s political allies, particularly during the 2018–2022 period following the Handshake between Raila and Uhuru.
During his tenure, Matiang’i frequently represented the government at high-level functions linked to the opposition leader, often lauding Raila’s role in promoting national unity.
Raila and Matiang’i shared a mutual respect forged through years of political engagement.
Matiang’i, himself from Kisii County, once described Raila as “a statesman who stood tall for justice and democracy, a man whose sacrifices gave us the freedoms we enjoy today.”
Raila died on October 15, 2025. He will be buried on Sunday at Bondo, Kisumu.
