The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) on Thursday morning staged a meticulously organized reception at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) ahead of the arrival of the late former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga’s body.

The military display, marked by precision and solemnity, reflected the full honors accorded to a statesman of Raila’s stature.

A military band was already in position, rehearsing soft dirges that filled the air with an air of national mourning.

Nearby, a gun carriage, polished and draped in the national colors, stood ready to carry the casket bearing the body of the veteran leader once it arrives.

According to officials, the Kenya Airways flight RAO001, which was assigned a special call sign in Raila’s honor, is expected to touch down at 9:30 a.m.

The call sign, derived from Raila’s initials, was adopted as a symbolic gesture to celebrate his lifelong service to Kenya.

President William Ruto is expected to lead senior government officials, military chiefs, and Raila’s family in receiving the body at the airport. Members of the opposition and diplomatic corps have also been invited to witness the brief but historic ceremony.

KDF officers have demonstrated their sharp, disciplined, and orderly conduct at the venue, with rehearsals conducted since early morning to ensure flawless execution.

Security at JKIA and surrounding areas has been heightened, with both military and police officers maintaining tight coordination.

The late Raila Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday while undergoing treatment in India, will be accorded a state funeral with full military honors, as announced by President Ruto.

Following the arrival ceremony, the body will be moved to Lee Funeral Home before being taken to Parliament Buildings for public viewing.

Friday, October 17, has been declared a public holiday in honor of the former Prime Minister, whose legacy as a freedom fighter, reformist, and father of devolution continues to define Kenya’s political history.
