Kikuyu Council of Elders (KCE) has joined Kenyans in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga, describing him as a towering nationalist and selfless statesman whose legacy will live on for generations.

The council’s national chairperson, Wachira Kiago expressed deep sorrow over the passing of the long-serving opposition leader, saying his death is a huge loss to the entire nation.

“The council expresses deep sadness over the demise of Kenya’s longtime nationalist leader and Pan-Africanist, Raila Odinga”.

“On behalf of the Kikuyu community, we convey our heartfelt condolences to his wife Mama Ida Odinga, his family, and the Luo community for this monumental loss,” said Kiago.

The council hailed Raila as a leader who consistently put the interests of the nation above personal ambition, noting that his willingness to reach out to rivals reflected rare statesmanship.

His record of stretching a hand of friendship to four presidential rivals, Kiago noted, was a vivid display of unequaled tolerance.

He praised his tireless fight for democracy, human rights and devolution that caused him immense physical and emotional suffering yet he never wavered.

The elder said Odinga’s death has robbed the country a unifying beacon of hope and urged citizens to accord him a dignified send-off befitting his immense contribution to the nation.

“He deserves a dignified send-off, and our council appeals to all Kenyans to give him this honor,” he stated.

The elders also commended President William Ruto for providing leadership that has helped calm the nation during a period of grief.

The council’s secretary general, James Nene, echoed similar sentiments, noting that Raila played a vital role in bridging the historical rift between various communities.

“There was a time when relations between the Kikuyu and Luo communities were strained but through Raila’s guidance and meetings facilitated by elders from both sides, we managed to restore unity. His passing on is a big blow to our cohesion efforts,” said Nene.

He further revealed that Odinga was instrumental in fostering inter-community dialogue through the Mapatano Elders Association, a platform bringing together elders from various communities to promote peace and understanding.

“We came together as elders of different communities under the Mapatano Elders Association to foster unity and cohesion. Raila supported this mission wholeheartedly, and we are determined to continue his vision,” Nene added.

The council reaffirmed its commitment to advancing national unity and discouraging political incitement that often fuels ethnic divisions during electioneering periods.

“Our unity as community elders is aimed at ending conflicts sparked by political rivalries. We must ensure that political competition does not divide our people,” he emphasized.
