The United States has joined the global community in mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.
In a statement, the US described him as a statesman who devoted his life to the service of his nation, the African continent, and democracy.
The message conveyed heartfelt condolences to Raila’s family, friends, and the people of Kenya following his passing.
“The United States offers sincere condolences to the family, friends, loved ones, and all Kenyans over the passing of the Right Honorable Raila Odinga,” the statement read.
Washington lauded the opposition leader’s long-standing relationship with the United States, noting that he had forged “deep connections with the American people and our elected leaders” during his numerous visits to the country over the decades.
Raila, a respected reformist and five-time presidential contender, was known internationally for his commitment to multi-party democracy and social justice.
The statement further recognised Raila's continental influence, saying he worked tirelessly to advance peace, unity, and development in Africa.
“Throughout Africa, he worked for peace and helped build ties among countries,” the US government said, highlighting his role as a mediator in regional conflicts and a proponent of African integration.
Calling him “a champion of Kenya’s development and success as a democracy,” the US hailed Raila's lifelong efforts to strengthen institutions, promote transparency, and empower citizens through good governance.
Raila’s political career, marked by resilience and sacrifice, spanned over four decades, from his early days in opposition politics under one-party rule to his leadership in government as Kenya’s second Prime Minister under the Grand Coalition formed after the 2007-2008 post-election crisis.
Raila passed away Wednesday morning at Devamatha Hospitall in India.
He has been in the country for the last five days undergoing treatment.
Several other world leaders have also sent condolences following the death.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow following the death, describing him as a “towering statesman and a cherished friend of India.”
Modi is a longtime friend of the PM.
In a condolence message shared moments after the death, Modi said he was “deeply saddened by the passing of "my dear friend".
He recalled his long-standing friendship with Raila, which began during his tenure as Chief Minister of Gujarat and continued for many years.
“I had the privilege of knowing him closely since my days as Chief Minister of Gujarat, and our association continued over the years,” Modi stated.
The Indian leader praised Raila for his enduring affection for India, noting that he held a deep appreciation for Indian culture, values, and wisdom.
“He had a special affection for India, our culture, values, and ancient wisdom,” Modi said, emphasizing Raila’s role in strengthening bilateral relations between Kenya and India.
