Kenya and China have embarked on preliminary trade talks aimed at strengthening trade and investment relations between the two nations.

The discussion also focuses on market access for Kenyan exports and improving Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) standards to align with international trade requirements.

Sanitary and phytosanitary standards are a set of regulations and measures designed to protect plants from pests and diseases, ensuring that plants and plant products are free from harmful organisms for international trade and national protection.

These standards are based on principles outlined by the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC).

Trade Principal Secretary Regina Ombam met with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China to Kenya, Guo Haiyan on Monday for a consultative meeting at the Ministry of Trade offices in Nairobi.

The talks are part of ongoing efforts to finalise a trade framework that will open more opportunities for Kenyan products in the Chinese market.

According to PS Ombam, the proposed agreement seeks to expand market access for key export commodities such as tea, coffee, and fish, while creating a stable foundation for future trade partnerships.

The discussions also emphasised the need to enhance Sanitary and Phytosanitary measures for fish and agricultural products.

This, the officials noted, will help ensure product safety, facilitate smoother trade, and promote compliance with global standards.

"The talks also focused on enhancing Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) measures for fish and agricultural products to facilitate smoother trade and ensure compliance with international standards," the statement said.

Ambassador Guo Haiyan reaffirmed China’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s economic growth through increased trade and investment collaboration.

She noted that China remains open to deepening cooperation in various sectors, including agriculture, manufacturing, and infrastructure.

Both sides also agreed on the importance of promoting sustainable and inclusive trade, where local producers and small enterprises can benefit from expanded export markets. The talks are expected to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive trade and investment agreement between the two countries.

The two governments reaffirmed their shared commitment to a mutually beneficial partnership that supports sustainable development, investment, and prosperity for both nations.

"Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to building a mutually beneficial partnership that supports sustainable trade, investment and shared prosperity," The statement concluded.

Kenya and China enjoy a long-standing partnership anchored in trade, infrastructure development, and technical cooperation.

China remains one of Kenya’s largest trading partners, with growing interest in agricultural products, minerals, and value-added goods.
