Health workers under the Universal Health Coverage (UHC) programme held a peaceful demonstration in Nairobi on Tuesday to push for better terms of service and fulfilment of promises made by the government.
The procession began at Green Park Terminus next to Uhuru Park Gardens.
They marched to Afya House and the Ministry of Health headquarters before proceeding to the Public Service Commission.
They also made their way to the National Treasury along Harambee Avenue, and the Council of Governors at Delta Place, Westlands.
The march later culminated at Parliament Buildings, where the group presented petitions to the relevant offices.
The healthcare workers were led by National Chairperson Desmond Wafula and National Secretary General Aka Mtai.
They called on the Ministry of Health, Public Service Commission, and Council of Governors to immediately begin the process of converting the terms of service for all healthcare workers under the UHC programme to permanent and pensionable.
They said the process should utilise resources already allocated by the National Assembly in the 2025/2026 financial year.
The demonstrators also demanded the payment of gratuities to all UHC staff as outlined in Gazette Notice No. 8091 dated October 12, 2020 and the redesignation of job groups according to individual qualifications.

During the peaceful march, the leaders reiterated that the protest was aimed at drawing attention to long-standing grievances affecting UHC workers across the country.
They called for fairness, job security, and improved working conditions to strengthen the delivery of healthcare services under the UHC program.
The demonstration attracted an estimated 3,000 health workers from various parts of the country.
The UHC staff leadership affirmed that their action was peaceful and within the law, urging the government to act promptly on their demands to ensure the stability and effectiveness of the Universal Health Coverage programme.
