Two pupils were killed in a tragedy after falling stones hit them within their compound in Kayole, Nairobi.

Two others were rushed to hospital with multiple injuries following the incident at the Emmanuel New Life Academy Nyaura, police said.

The stones hit four pupils who were in PP2, killing two of them.

The stones dropped from a high-rise building under construction and next to the school, witnesses and police said.

This caused anger among locals who demanded action on the contractor, saying there were no safety measures in place to ensure the victims were safe at large.

Others blamed county officials for the deaths and injuries.

Witnesses and police said the victims were washing their hands at a tap within the compound and next to the building under construction when the stones dropped past midday on October 6, 2025.

Witnesses and police described the scene as horrible as their heartbroken parents rushed there hoping to find them alive.

The children were rushed to hospital, where the two were confirmed dead on arrival, police said.

The other two were admitted in the hospital, waiting to be transferred to the Kenyatta National Hospital.

They were in critical condition, police and doctors at Mama Lucy Hospital said. Police visited the scene and announced they are investigating the tragedy.

Nairobi police commander George Seda said a team is investigating the tragedy with the aim of taking necessary action.

Tension rose in the area with locals demanding action on the developer. The bodies of the minors were moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and other investigations.

Police, county officials and those from the National Construction Authority visited the scene on Monday and Tuesday as part of the probe into the incident.

Such death incidents have been common at construction sites in urban areas.

Some workers are killed at the sites after falling or being hit by falling stones.

Lack of protection gear and proper enforcement has been blamed for the incidents amid calls for more measures to ensure safety at large.

Others link the deaths to greed among developers who overlook measures in place while constructing the structures.

Police, county officials and those from the National Construction Authority have been put on the spot for the incidents amid calls for proper enforcement of the laws for the general safety of many at the scenes.

Past cases that have been reported are under probe, officials said.
