Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir has been elected the chairperson
of the Council of Governors Committee on Health, in an election held on Monday.
In his new capacity, Nassir takes over from Tharaka Nithi
Governor Muthomi Njuki, who will take on the new role of the CoG’s Whip.
Speaking on his election, Nassir thanked colleague governors
for trusting him with such a responsibility.
He went on to say that it reflects on the great work his
staff in the health sector in Mombasa have been doing in serving the people.
“I am deeply grateful to my colleague Governors for
entrusting me with the responsibility of Chairing the Committee on Health. This
honour is not mine alone; it is a recognition of the incredible men and women
in Mombasa’s health sector who go above and beyond every single day to serve
our people with dedication, compassion, and professionalism,” Nassir said.
The Mombasa Governor added that it is now time for him and
his team to work even harder to make Mombasa a model for healthcare delivery in
Kenya
“Let us not tire. Together, we must work even harder to keep
Mombasa at the forefront of healthcare delivery in Kenya; ensuring that every
resident can access quality care and that our county remains number one in
matters of health,” he added.
In the election held at the Council’s offices at Delta
Centre, Westlands, Wajir Governor Ahmed Abdullahi and his Nyeri counterpart
Mutahi Kahiga will continue serving as Chair and Vice Chair of the Council of
Governors (CoG).
“We, the executive, having been duly elected to serve,
hereby commit to the following priorities in strengthening the mandate of the
Council and protecting the spirit of devolution,” Abdullahi said.
Kisii Governor Simba Arati, who previously chaired the
Resource Mobilisation Committee, will now lead the Security and Foreign
Relations Committee.
The new leadership committed to operationalising the
Devolution Training Institute and implementing the Council’s Strategic Plan
(2022–2027). It also pledged to finalise the transfer and costing of devolved
functions and strengthen devolution across all sectors.
