

Mandera East Member of Parliament Hussein Weytan has condemned
a suspected hand grenade attack that left three injured at a Hotel in Mandera
Town on Saturday night.
In a statement, the MP described the incident as tragic and
one that has left the community traumatized.
“I am deeply saddened to learn of the explosion that
occurred at Kona B Hotel in Mandera Town on Saturday night, which left three
individuals seriously injured. This tragic incident has left the community
traumatized,” Weytan said.
He sent his heartfelt sympathies to those affected and
wished the injured a quick recovery.
“My thoughts and prayers are with the injured. I commend the
medical team who are working tirelessly to provide them with the treatment they
need,” he said.
Weytan also comforted the families of the victims, assuring
them of the community’s support and solidarity during this difficult time.
“To the families and loved ones of those hurt, please know
that you are not alone. The entire community stands with you in solidarity,” he
stated.
The legislator called on authorities to carry out a thorough
investigation into the cause of the explosion to guarantee the safety and
security of residents.
“I also call on the relevant authorities to conduct a
thorough investigation into the cause of this explosion to ensure the safety
and security of all our citizens,” he said.
Weytan urged unity among residents, saying the community
must come together to overcome the tragedy.
“Let us come together in unity and compassion as we support
one another through this moment of hardship. Mandera is strong, and together,
we will overcome,” he concluded.
According to a police report seen by The Star, the incident
occurred around 6:40 pm at Jakkey Hotel, located in the Corner B area of
Mandera East Sub-County.
The hotel is reportedly frequented by non-locals.
The report, filed under OB No. 48/4/10/2025 at 8:30 pm,
states that the explosion injured three individuals who were rushed to Mandera
Referral Hospital for treatment.
Those injured were identified as Dominic Muthui, 35, who
sustained injuries to both hands and his left leg; Steven Musyoka, 30, who was
injured on his left hand; and Willy Okiya Kemboi, 32, who suffered injuries to
his right leg.
Police said all three victims were treated and are in stable
condition.
Security officials, including the Sub-County Police
Commander (SCPC), DCIO Mandera East, OCS, and officers from the Anti-Terrorism
Police Unit (ATPU), visited the scene immediately after the incident.
A multi-agency security operation led by the Kenya Defence
Forces (KDF) was launched in the area to pursue suspects and secure the scene.
Authorities are treating the case as a suspected
terror-related incident, though investigations are ongoing to establish the
motive and those behind the attack.
Police said more details will be provided as investigations
continue.
