Police officers from Kathare Police Station, working in collaboration with National Police Reservists from Buuri East and Isiolo have successfully recovered all livestock stolen in a recent raid in Meru County.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the animals were recovered during an intelligence-led operation, which culminated in a dramatic exchange of gunfire between the officers and suspected rustlers.
The suspects were subdued, and the stolen animals were retrieved and safely escorted back to Kathare Police Station, before being returned to their rightful owners.
“The livestock were later escorted to Kathare Police Station and returned to their rightful owners,” NPS stated in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
NPS further revealed that although the recovery was successful, the suspects involved in the raid managed to escape and remain at large. A manhunt is currently underway to bring them to justice.
“The National Police Service commends the swift action of the officers involved and reiterates its commitment to combating livestock theft and safeguarding livelihoods,” the statement added.
The NPS also urged the public to continue working closely with law enforcement agencies by reporting any suspicious activities, and provided several toll-free lines for quick access: 999, 911, 112, and #FichuaKwaDCI (0800 722 203), or via WhatsApp (0709 570 000).
The successful recovery comes just two weeks after residents from Isiolo and Meru counties held demonstrations demanding urgent intervention from both national and county governments to end the persistent menace of livestock theft.
During the protests, farmers and herders expressed frustration over frequent raids, which they say have devastated families who rely on livestock as their primary source of livelihood.
Protesters accused some security personnel of collusion with
rustlers and called for accountability and immediate action.
The Buuri East Sub-County Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCIO) confirmed that forensic investigations have commenced and assured the public that every effort is being made to dismantle the networks behind the livestock thefts.
Authorities are also evaluating intelligence reports
suggesting the involvement of organized syndicates, possibly operating across
county lines.
