The Ballon d'Or is the most coveted individual prize in football. Launched in 1956 by France Football magazine, it was initially designed to honour the best European player of the year, voted on by a select panel of European journalists.

Over nearly seven decades, the award has evolved. By 1995, it opened to non-European players at European clubs, allowing global talents like Brazil's Ronaldo to shine.
