President William Ruto on Thursday hosted vice-chancellors of public universities at State House Nairobi.
The President said they reviewed progress in the management of the institutions and identified the key issues to focus on going forward.
Ruto said in the last financial year, the institutions of
higher learning raised Sh1 billion from income-generating activities.
President William Ruto holds a meeting with vice-chancellors of public universities at State House Nairobi on September 18, 2025 / PCS “Our public universities are making steady and demonstrable progress in strengthening their role of teaching and training Kenya's human capital,” Ruto said.
“With the new student-centred funding model providing more funds and budgetary allocation rising from Sh44 billion in 2022 to Sh82 billion in 2025-2026, the challenges of financing higher education are being dealt with."
The President said that already 10 of the 23 universities that had been declared insolvent in 2022 have since improved their financial standing.
