Beatrice Chebet’s victory in the women’s 10,000m at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo has drawn an outpouring of congratulatory messages from Kenyan leaders.

President William Ruto praised Chebet for delivering Kenya’s first gold medal at the championships.

“Congratulations Beatrice Chebet for winning Kenya’s first gold medal at the 2025 Tokyo World Athletics Championships in the women’s 10,000 metres. You have not only made us proud but also set the pace for Team Kenya in the tournament. Let’s keep the winning spirit alive, Team Kenya!”

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba described Chebet’s performance as a “breathtaking final lap sprint,” while Nairobi Woman Representative Esther Passaris called her an inspiration to “a whole generation of athletes in Kenya and beyond.”

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen also hailed her “stunning victory” and thanked her for opening Kenya’s medal account “in spectacular fashion.”

Health CS Aden Duale also joined in, noting: “Heartfelt congratulations to Beatrice Chebet for her stellar triumph in Tokyo. Winning Kenya's first gold at the 2025 Championships in the women's 10,000m is a great start for Team Kenya!”

Interior PS Raymond Omollo celebrated her achievement, stating: “Kenya celebrates with pride as Beatrice Chebet clinches the women's 10,000m gold at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, our first at the event. Congratulations on this historic achievement!”

Chebet stormed to gold in 30:37.61, ending a decade-long drought in the event last won by Vivian Cheruiyot at the 2015 Beijing World Championships.

Italian Nadia Battocletti clinched silver in a national record of 30:38.23, while Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay took bronze in 30:39.65.

Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich, the road world record holder, finished fourth in 30:42.66 under hot and humid conditions.

The win cements Chebet’s place as one of Kenya’s greatest athletes—she is now the world record holder, reigning Olympic champion, and world champion in the 10,000m.

It also guarantees her an enhanced reward of Sh3 million, as promised by President Ruto for each gold medalist.

Meanwhile, Kenya’s formidable women’s 1500m squad of Faith Kipyegon, Dorcus Ewoi, Nelly Chepchirchir and Susan Ejore have qualified for the semifinals, raising hopes of another podium sweep.

Chebet’s triumph, her second global medal in as many years, not only lifted national pride but also set the tone for Kenya’s campaign in Tokyo.
