Two people died and three others were critically injured in a road accident along the Nairobi–Mombasa highway in Athi River, Machakos County, on Wednesday morning.
The victims were pronounced dead on arrival at Machakos Level 5 Hospital after the vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a crash near Luqman petrol station in the Lukenya area at about 7:30 am.
According to police, the deceased were a 28-year-old woman and a 48-year-old man.
The incident was reported to Kyumbi Police Station as a fatal road traffic accident.
A police report stated that the crash involved a Toyota Probox headed towards Nairobi.
The driver, identified as Stephen Mutinda, 40, is reported to have lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and roll several times before landing on its roof.
Mutinda was among those critically injured and was taken to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for treatment.
Also injured were a 59-year-old woman, who sustained rib injuries, and a four-year-old girl, who suffered cuts on her forehead and lower lip.
“The five were all rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital, where the two were confirmed dead on arrival.
The three others are still undergoing treatment,” police said.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the hospital mortuary for autopsy.
The vehicle’s wreckage was towed to Kyumbi Police Station for inspection as investigations into the cause of the accident continue.
The accident occurred just metres from where a separate incident was reported on Saturday night, when a private Audi A4 burst into flames near Simba Cement in the same area.
Police said the driver, who was travelling from Nairobi towards Mombasa, escaped unhurt after the car developed mechanical problems before catching fire.
