Business in Marsabit town was brought to a standstill on Wednesday as angry residents took to the streets to protest the killing of a boda boda rider.
The 22-year-old rider was attacked on Tuesday night by assailants posing as passengers.
The attackers ambushed him near the PACIDA offices in Manyatta Ginda around 10 p.m. and stabbed him several times in the neck, ribs, and back.
Security reports indicate the assailants may have intended to steal the victim’s motorcycle, but the attempt was unsuccessful.
News of the killing sparked protests on Wednesday morning. Residents and boda boda operators blocked roads, lit bonfires, and demanded swift action from security agencies.
Tension remained high throughout the day as businesses stayed closed and activity in the town slowed to a minimum.
“We have borne the biggest brunt,” said boda boda rider Galgalo Boru.
“The nature of our job requires that we operate even at night. Unfortunately, the criminals have resorted to targeting us. Several people are nursing serious wounds inflicted by the criminals.”
Boru added that insecurity in the area has been escalating. “For the last three months we have had cases of people being attacked by criminals whose sole purpose is to kill and rob them of their valuables,” he said.
Marsabit Central Sub-county Deputy Commissioner David Saruni confirmed the incident and said investigations are underway. He assured residents that security agencies are pursuing the suspects and appealed for calm.
This killing comes just months after another rider was murdered in Marta Arba, further fueling fears of rising crime in the county.
By evening, the heavy police presence had restored relative calm in the town, but residents remained uneasy.
