Faith Kemunto, who was murdered.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have revealed that the lady whose body was exhumed from a shallow grave in Nyamira was set to join the University.

According to investigators, Faith Kemunto, 20, disappeared in July 2025, after she travelled home from Nairobi, in preparation to join Machakos University.

Witnesses said she travelled on July 27, and upon arrival, she left home to meet her boyfriend, Gedio Makori, but she was never seen alive again.

Her disappearance prompted her family to report the matter at Nyamira Police Station.

Despite initial efforts, the search for Kemunto and her boyfriend yielded no positive results.

Investigations carried out revealed that the man had fled to Huruma estate in Nairobi, where he had been holed up before being smoked out by the detectives.

Upon his arrest on Wednesday, he was found in possession of Kemunto’s mobile phone.

He was escorted to Nyamira and is currently being held at Ekerenyo Police Station.

On Thursday, police exhumed a body believed to be that of Kemunto, which was buried in a shallow grave in Maosi, Nyamira.

The exercise was done following an order issued by the Nyamira Law Courts.

This followed an initial discovery of the suspicious grave on Tuesday, at 7:40 am

Police said the exhumation exercise of 20-year-old Faith Kemunto took place on Thursday afternoon, beginning at 3 pm and concluding at 4pm, at a murram site.

The operation was led by the Homicide Team from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters, alongside forensic and crime scene investigation officers.

Also present during the exhumation were a government pathologist, Dr Richard Njoroge, police officers from Nyamira South and Nyamira North, public health officers from Nyamira, a mortician from Nyamira Referral Hospital Mortuary, and local administration officials.

The remains were carefully exhumed, processed and documented by CSI officers from DCI Headquarters and Nyamira.

The body was transported to Nyamira County Referral Hospital morgue for preservation, pending postmortem examination.

On Friday, Makori and another suspect, Vinic Kemunto, were arraigned before Nyamira Chief Magistrate Bernard Ochieng.

DCI requested the court to detain the suspects who had been cohabiting with him in Huruma estate for 21 days pending investigations, before they can take a plea on murder charges.

The court granted the prayer.
