A Sudanese student was fatally stabbed by a friend on Monday night in Eldoret following a quarrel during a wrestling contest.

Ainabkoi OCPD Stephen Kimunya said police have launched a manhunt for the suspect, who fled after the incident at Kapsoya estate.

The victim, identified as 17-year-old Deng Junior, was a Form Four student.

According to police, the deceased had been participating in a friendly wrestling game with several others when the fight turned tragic.

“During the contest, the deceased floored the suspect and pinned him to the ground,” Kimunya said.

The suspect, angered after the match, is said to have stormed into his house, returned with a knife, and stabbed Deng in the chest.

Friends at the scene rushed the teenager to St. Mary’s Hospital before he was referred to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital. He was pronounced dead on arrival.

Kimunya said police officers were alerted immediately but found the attacker had already escaped. “Our officers are hunting for the assailant, who is said to be a hustler in the area,” he said.

Both the deceased and the suspect are refugees living in Kapsoya estate, which hosts a large Sudanese refugee community. Kimunya revealed that Deng had not reported back to school due to financial difficulties.

His body has been moved to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital morgue. The family, who lives within the estate, has been notified of the death.

“Our officers are following up to ensure the suspect is arrested and brought to book over the murder,” Kimunya added.

Police later visited the suspect’s house but did not find him.
