Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja

Nairobi County Assembly members (MCAs) are expected back at State House to seal the deal that led to the dropping of the impeachment bid against Governor Johnson Sakaja.

The MCAs and County Executive led by Sakaja are scheduled to meet President William Ruto  in line with what they agreed yesterday.

In the meeting, MCAs are expected to formally table their demands and conditions to be met by the Sakaja-led executive and the timelines for implementation.

MCAs from both the Majority and Minority sides will hold a joint meeting for the first time following separate meetings on Tuesday that led to the shelving of the plan.

The city legislators on Tuesday evening met in their separate groups to harmonise their demands, which will then be tabbed at the State House meeting.

Among the demands is clearance of all the outstanding cash owed to the ward Fund projects, allocation of bursary funds, payment of pending bills owed to contractors, and completion of any stalled projects, including roads and markers.

Some of the MCAs are also demanding that Governor Sakaja reshuffles his executive and either drop or move some members of the county executive committee, chief officers and some of his aides over what they termed as inefficiency.

“We are meeting Wednesday morning (today) with the President and the Governor so that in his presence, both sides can highlight the issues and agree on a working formula,” South C MCA Waithera Chege, who is also the Deputy Minority Leader, said on Tuesday evening.

Waithera said that during a meeting hosted by President Ruto, the Minority side was convinced to drop the motion for at least two months and review the progress of their demands after sixty days.

Ruto met his UDA MCAs in the afternoon, while ODM leader Raila Odinga, who has held a series of meetings with the county assembly leadership, also met the Majority side at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation (JOOF) offices in Upperhill.

After a nearly 4-hour meeting, Makadara MP George Aladwa, who was in the meetin,g said the MCAs and Sakaja had a candid conversation with the Governor apologising to the legislators.

Speaking during an ODM consultative meeting with Raila, Speaker Ken Ngondi reminded leaders and the public that the Assembly plays an oversight role and must not be undermined or treated as an extension of the Executive.

“The Assembly is not a department of the Executive. Our mandate is to legislate, represent the people, and hold the Executive accountable. County government is not a private entity; it belongs to the people,” Ngondi emphasised.
