Detectives have arrested a man in connection with the loss of more than Sh500,000 from a client while allegedly posing as a taxi driver in Nairobi’s Lavington area.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said the suspect was arrested by officers from headquarters following a report filed by the complainant.

According to investigators, the complainant stated he was leaving a social joint on the night of August 8, 2025, when he and a friend encountered the suspect.

The complainant said he had been in the process of requesting a ride through Uber when the suspect, who was waiting nearby, offered a cheaper fare.

After dropping the passengers off at an Airbnb in Lavington, the suspect is reported to have disappeared with the complainant’s mobile phone.

Police said more than Sh500,000 was transferred from the device to multiple accounts, which were later deactivated.

Detectives arrested the suspect while he was driving a Mazda Demio fitted with suspected fake registration plates.

Two sets of plates were recovered, alongside several mobile phones, multiple SIM cards and a sisal rope.

The DCI said the suspect has been handed over to its Dagoretti offices for further processing.

The Lavington arrest came just hours after police in Embakasi apprehended two suspects and recovered a firearm during a night patrol.

The officers from the National Police Service were on ia a night patrol in the Pipeline area when they received intelligence from the public.

They were alerted by the public about suspicious individuals allegedly in possession of a firearm in the pipeline area.
"The team proceeded to Munche Building on the 6th floor. Upon entering a room occupied by the suspects, a search was conducted. This led to the recovery of a Powerline Airstrike pistol concealed inside a carton box," NPS said in a statement.
The suspects are currently in custody as further investigation into the matter continues. They are expected to be processed and arraigned once the investigations are completed.
