Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has expressed concern over the handling of funds within the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
Speaking at the party headquarters on Tuesday, Kalonzo said accountability will be a priority for the opposition if it forms the next government.
“As the WPF, we believe those responsible for any misuse of public funds must be held accountable. As the government-in-waiting, we will prioritise justice and transparency,” Kalonzo said.
His remarks came a day after Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Daule announced that the ministry had rejected claims worth Sh10.6 billion from health providers under the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF).
The CS said claims worth Sh3 billion are being re-evaluated due to missing documentation, while another Sh2.1 billion are under surveillance for further investigation.
Kalonzo also extended his criticism to the education sector, claiming a delay in the release of capitation funds.
“Pupils are being sent home for lack of school fees. In the case of the universities, students have received SMS indicating that their accounts had been credited, only to be turned down on the date of admission,” he claimed.
His comments on capitation money came days after Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba announced that the ministry had disbursed Sh23.16 billion to support 802,159 university and TVET students across the country.
In a statement on August 29, Ogamba said Sh4.1 billion in scholarships was released to public universities through the Universities Fund, while the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) disbursed Sh19.06 billion. Out of this, Sh7.6 billion went to tuition and Sh11.46 billion to student upkeep.
The CS added that upkeep funds were sent directly to students’ payment channels and urged learners to log in to their Higher Education Funding portals to confirm disbursements.
He also extended the deadline for first-year applicants to September 14, 2025, saying the government was committed to ensuring no student is left behind.
Turning to politics, Kalonzo urged Kenyans to register as voters in the upcoming exercise.
“Finally, the IEBC has announced the start of voter registration on September 29, 2025. We urge all Kenyans of legal age to get their IDs and register as voters. This is the way we shall rescue and reclaim our beloved nation. Together, we shall #KomboaKenya,” he said.
