Police in Eldoret have arrested two suspects and seized a
vehicle transporting 500 litres of illicit brew.
The operation took place on Monday, September 1, 2025, after
officers from Eldoret Police Station received a tip-off about a car suspected
to be ferrying chang’aa.
Led by the Officer Commanding Station (OCS), the officers
mounted a search and intercepted a Toyota Corolla in the Asis area.
A search of the vehicle uncovered chang’aa packed in
polythene pouches and plastic bottles.
“Acting on the information, the officers mounted a search
operation and intercepted the vehicle, a Toyota Corolla, in the Asis area. Upon
searching, they discovered five hundred (500) litres of chang’aa,
which was packed in polythene pouches and plastic bottles,” Police said in a
statement.
Both occupants of the car were arrested and are being held
at Eldoret Police Station as they await arraignment in court.
In a statement, the National Police Service said it will
continue to intensify operations targeting the production and distribution of
illicit brews.
“The Service remains committed to safeguarding the health,
safety, and well-being of the public,” it noted.
The arrest comes after Interior and National Administration
Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen announced the formation of a national
multi-agency team to carry out sting operations across the country during a
media briefing ahead of the Jukwaa la Usalama Nyeri chapter.
The CS vowed to ensure continuous crackdowns until the vice
is decimated, not only in Central but also in other parts of the country where
the establishments are operating with illegal licenses or none.
"We have agreed at the security meeting with the IG and
the CEO of NACADA that we are going to establish a special multi-agency team that
will include KEBS, KRA, among other agencies, to work together to ensure
compliance," revealed the CS.
He said the Multi-Agency Team will be coordinated from
Nairobi, where the regional and county need support.
"Where we feel the need to reinforce, the national team
will be called in to support this issue of alcohol in our country."
