The National Police Service (NPS) has recovered 1,300 litres of chang'aa and a full set of brewing apparatus in Riokari village, Magena sublocation, Kisii county.

This was during an intensified crackdown on illicit alcohol in Kisii county in joint collaboration with National Government Administration Officers (NGAO).

The operation was led by officers from Magena Police Station and targeted illegal alcohol production activities in the area.

Although the owner of the homestead managed to escape, authorities have launched a manhunt and say his arrest is imminent.

“The recovered exhibits have been secured, and investigations are ongoing to ensure the suspect is brought to justice,” NPS said.

The NPS has issued a strong warning to members of the public against engaging in the production, sale or distribution of illicit brews.

“These activities are not only illegal but pose serious health and safety risks to consumers,” NPS stated.

Police have reaffirmed their commitment to working with other agencies and local communities to eliminate illegal alcohol and safeguard public health.

“Anyone found contravening the law will face stern legal action,” NPS added.

On May 27, 2025, NPS arrested one suspect and seized 481 litres of chang'aa in Kisii's Sameta subcounty in the ongoing crackdown on illicit alcohol and drugs.

NPS said in a statement that the targeted operation was led by Superintendent of police Lucy Mugambi at Itumbe stage.

"The officers seized 481 litres of chang'aa, a batch of a substance suspected to be cannabis sativa, two imitation FN rifles, one toy pistol, and other items believed to be used in criminal activities," the statement said.

"One person was arrested, and the items remain in police custody as investigations continue," it added.

The government is currently undertaking a multi-agency nationwide crackdown on illicit alcohol and drugs, a response to the escalating public health and security concerns linked to the widespread production, distribution, and consumption of illegal brews and narcotics.
