Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has urged the
government to prioritise water and sewerage systems over new housing projects
in Kajiado County.
Speaking on Sunday when he attended a church service in
Ongata Rongai, Gachagua said residents in Ongata Rongai, Kiserian, Ngong and
Matasia are already well served with houses.
He however said that they continue to face a persistent
shortage of clean water and proper sewerage infrastructure.
“I want to ask the government to listen to the people of
Ongata Rongai, Kiserian, Ngong up to Matasia. There are enough houses here and the challenge is water and sewerage. Instead of houses, provide them with water
and the sewerage system,” he said.
Gachagua noted that while the government’s affordable
housing agenda remains a key national priority, investments must reflect the
pressing needs of communities.
Residents in the affected areas have long complained about
water scarcity and poor sanitation facilities, which they say pose health and
environmental risks.
The former DP warned against buying the affordable houses
saying that if they win elections in 2027, the projects will be stopped and the
land handed back to the church and all investors will lose their money.
He also cautioned the state against taking land belonging to
the PCEA church in Kajiado to have the affordable housing.
“They are commercial houses and we want to be very fair and
kind to the unsuspecting investor who have been told to buy those houses in
advance. Msipoteze pesa yenu. We are going for elections and there will be a
new government and if the land is forcefully taken from the church we will
return it and you will have lost your money. The title of this property is
under PCEA,” Gachagua said.
