Detectives are investigating the murder of two people whose bodies were found lying in a pool of blood in Bambra village, Ugunja, Siaya County.

The deceased included a five-year-old boy, police said.

The bodies of Nyamanga Otieno, 30, and her son were found in a pool of blood in the house on Tuesday after the murder.

Police said the husband had a scuffle with Nyamanga before he used a jembe to hit her in the head, fatally.

He later turned on the son and clobbered him to death.

According to the police, the man later attempted suicide by swallowing a poisonous chemical.

Police said they found him lying unconscious next to a can whose poisonous contents he had swallowed.

He was rushed to the hospital, where he was admitted in serious condition.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy and investigations, police said.

Two other suicide incidents were reported in Machakos and Narok Counties.

The first incident happened in the Kakuyuni area, Machakos County, where a man died after swallowing poison. The second one happened in Lolgorian, Narok County, where a worker also swallowed poison.

The motives of the incidents are yet to be established, and the bodies were moved to the mortuaries pending an autopsy.

Police also said they are investigating the incidents.

Suicide cases have been on the rise in the country amid efforts to contain the trend.

Police say they record up to three cases daily.

Most of the victims are men, statistics show.

The World Health Organisation says such cases are attributed to joblessness, death, academic failures or pressures, legal difficulties and financial difficulties.

Other reasons are bullying, previous suicide attempts, history of suicide in a family, alcoholism and substance misuse, depression and bipolar disorder. The government says efforts are being made to address the menace.
