Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has mourned ex-Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel, saying his DCP party has lost a dependable ally.
“I have learned of the untimely passing on of Hon. Mathew Lempurkel with a heavy heart. Hon. Lempurkel was a member of the DCP PARTY and former Member of Parliament for Laikipia North,” Gachagua wrote on his Facebook page.
The former DP said that although Lempurkel has departed through a fatal road accident, his legacy will live on in our hearts, even as he sent condolences to the family.
“May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may Almighty God grant strength, comfort, and fortitude to his family, loved ones, and all who cherished him during this moment of grief. My deepest sympathies to you all.”
The ex-MP joined parliament in 2013 through Raila Odinga’s ODM party but lost his seat to Sarah Korere of Jubilee in 2017. His former party also mourned him.
“We mourn the passing on of Hon. Mathew Lempurkel Lekidime, the former MP for Laikipia North in the 11th Parliament under the ODM party ticket from 2013-2017 through a road accident. May God’s peace & comfort be with his family & the people of Laikipia during this time of grief,” Raila’s ODM party said in a statement.
Gachagua shared a couple of pictures he had taken with the ex-legislator when he visited his now-famous Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County.
The controversial former MP known for his strong Maa and chauvinistic remarks died at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) ICU where he was rushed to after a road accident in Ongata Ronga,Kajiado County last month.
In 2017 and 2021, the former MP was arrested and charged over tribal skirmishes in Laikipia and assault. In 2021, a Nairobi court jailed him for one year without an option of a fine for assaulting his successor, Korere.
While serving as MP in 2016, he assaulted Ms. Korere, who was then nominated MP, when they two met at former Interior CS Joseph Nkaissery’s office. Lempurkel later sent threatening messages to Ms. Korere to withdraw the complaint or face his wrath.
