Former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel dies after Rongai accident

Former Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel has passed away following a tragic road accident that occurred last week in Rongai.

Lempurkel, who sustained serious injuries in the crash, had been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi, where medical personnel worked tirelessly to save his life.

Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

The former legislator, known for his unwavering advocacy for the rights and welfare of the Maa community, served in the 11th Parliament from 2013 to 2017.

During his tenure, he gained recognition as a bold and outspoken leader committed to addressing historical injustices and championing marginalised communities.

His death has drawn widespread tributes from across the political spectrum, with leaders describing him as a courageous and selfless servant of the people.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua expressed sorrow at the news, noting Lempurkel’s contribution to national dialogue and grassroots politics.

“I learnt of the untimely passing of Hon. Mathew Lempurkel with a heavy heart. May his soul rest in eternal peace, and may Almighty God grant strength, comfort, and fortitude to his family, loved ones, and all who cherished him during this moment of grief. My deepest sympathies to you all,” Gachagua said in a statement.

He also recognised Lempurkel’s political affiliation with the Democracy for the Citizens Party, and noted that although he has departed, “his legacy will live on in our hearts.”

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), under whose ticket Lempurkel was elected in 2013, also paid tribute to the late lawmaker.

“We mourn the passing on of Hon. Mathew Lempurkel, who served as MP for Laikipia North in the 11th Parliament. May God’s peace and comfort be with his family and the people of Laikipia during this time of grief,” the party said in a statement.

Lempurkel’s passing is especially significant for the Maa community, where he was revered for his vocal stance on land rights, cultural preservation, and inclusive development.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
