Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has lauded Harambee Stars for their spirited performance at the Pamoja CHAN tournament despite being edged out at the quarters.

Kindiki assured them of the government’s full support as they prepare for future competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking at Kasarani Stadium after the Stars’ narrow quarter-final exit to Madagascar on penalties, Kindiki said the team had given their all and made the nation proud.

“There’s nothing you would have done that you haven’t done. We are very proud of you, very proud of the federation, and we will now take the lessons and build on the momentum, because the future of our soccer and our national team is very bright,” he told the players.

Kindiki, who was among the dignitaries in attendance, stressed that the government, through the Ministry of Sports, would work closely with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) to strengthen the team ahead of continental assignments.

“We have AFCON just around the corner, and I’m sure as a federation, as a ministry, we have a lot of work to do as government to support the players and the officials to ensure that when AFCON comes we do much better than we did during this competition,” he said.

The Stars, who bowed out 4-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw, received a standing ovation from fans for their resilience and fighting spirit throughout the tournament.

President William Ruto also praised Harambee Stars for their spirited performance.

“We had a remarkable run,” President Ruto said. “Harambee Stars have silenced doubters, lifted the spirit of a nation, and reminded us that when Kenyans play with courage, confidence, and determination, nothing is impossible.”

The Head of State noted that losing on penalties did not take away from the team’s achievements.

“Yes, we bowed out at the quarter-finals, but we fought valiantly to the very end. To lose in the lottery of penalties is no dishonour; to push the contest to such a finish is itself a badge of greatness.”

He congratulated Madagascar for their victory but stressed that Kenyans had every reason to celebrate their team.

“Throughout this tournament, our boys displayed resilience, grit, and an indomitable will. Every Kenyan is proud of you. You have united the country, given us moments of joy, and lifted our hopes.”
