SHA disburses Sh3.4bn to 2,048 health facilities countrywide

Mwangangi assured Kenyans that the authority remains committed to timely payments, accountability, and transparency.

The Social Health Authority (SHA) has released Sh3.4 billion to 2048 hospitals across the country, chief executive Dr Mercy Mwangangi has said.

The funds cover Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) claims, including inpatient care, drugs, mental wellness, substance abuse treatment, critical care, and surgeries.

"The Social Health Authority (SHA) has disbursed Sh3.4 billion to health facilities nationwide for Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) claims for inpatient care, drugs and substances abuse cover, mental wellness, critical care, and surgeries," the CEO said..

Mwangangi said in addition, Sh1.09 billion has been disbursed from the Primary Health Care Fund, with another Sh1.7 billion being processed to cater for dialysis, oncology, and surgical claims.

Mwangangi further responded to viral claims that Nyandiwa Level 4 hospital had not received any funds from the authority.

She clarified that Sh19 million had been disbursed to the facility as of June 2025.

“Nyandiwa Level 4 Hospital received Sh19 million between January and June 2025. The funds were for inpatient long stays and maternity services.

The SHA chief executive assured Kenyans that the authority remains committed to timely payments, accountability, and transparency.

Social Health Authority replaced the defunct National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF).

The government insists that it is best designed for universal health coverage for the people of Kenya.

So far, over 25 million Kenyans have registered with SHA, according to data from the government, with more expected to be on board.
