Former Jubilee Secretary General Raphael Tuju has resigned from the former
ruling Party.
In a letter addressed to former President Uhuru
Kenyatta, who remains the Jubilee party leader, Tuju said that while he looks forward
to work with him in future, as things stand, he does not see how he adds value to
the party.
“I still look forward to working with you in future. However, at the present
time, I see no more value that I can add to the Jubilee Party. I therefore
tender my resignation.
“Please accept my best wishes for your well-being and for the Party,” Tuju
said.
The former CS noted that he has been out of the country for six weeks and is
not fully aware of recent developments in Jubilee.
He, however, thanked Uhuru for the opportunity to serve as the party’s
secretary general from 2016 to 2022.
Tuju described his appointment as a bold
political step because he came from the Luo community while the party was
anchored in the Kikuyu and Kalenjin communities.
He said the aim was to build a national party beyond ethnic divisions.
He recalled that both he and Kenyatta had faced
political rejection in the past for not being considered loyal enough to their
ethnic bases.
Tuju said the 2018 handshake between Kenyatta and Raila Odinga caused
friction within Jubilee and strained his relationship with William Ruto,
despite efforts to resolve the differences.
Tuju praised Kenyatta’s decision to pursue
peace through the handshake, saying it helped prevent instability.
He noted that President William Ruto later made a similar compromise after
the Gen Z protests of 2024.
“I remained loyal to you as President, Party
Leader, and cabinet member,” Tuju stated.
He added that he still believes Kenyans can unite to confront unemployment
and poverty rather than fight along tribal lines.
However, he expressed good wishes to the party
and paid tribute to his long political association with Uhuru.
Before he left his position as Jubilee Secretary General, Tuju was named
Executive Director of the Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance.
The outfit had Raila Odinga as its party leader and Uhuru as its
chairperson.
