Nairobi motorists faced significant delays this Sunday, August 17, 2025, as police set up a roadblock at the Thika Road and Kiambu Road intersection near Muthaiga.

Traffic from the Nairobi CBD is now being diverted to Kiambu Road.

Vehicles heading into Kiambu Road were particularly affected, with CHAN ticket checks causing a heavy buildup of traffic.

Heavy traffic is reported to be building up from Pangani near the old Jubilee Party HQs.

The roadblock comes ahead of the highly anticipated Harambee Stars vs Zambia match in the CHAN 2024 tournament, scheduled for 3:00 PM at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The National Police Service has advised motorists to avoid Thika Road unless en route to the stadium.

Drivers heading toward Nairobi’s CBD from Thika, Juja, or Ruiru were instead directed to use alternate routes like Kiambu Road, Limuru Road, or the Eastern Bypass.

The diversion measures aim to manage the expected crush of fans, given that Kasarani’s capacity has been reduced to 27,000—only 60% of its usual seating—to ensure safety and comply with CAF regulations.

The roadblock—and the broader traffic restrictions—reflect a larger citywide effort to ensure smooth access to stadiums and to maintain security during matchday.

Motorists and fans alike are encouraged to plan early or consider alternative routes and viewing options, such as designated fan zones across Nairobi.
