Two people died early Saturday while three others sustained injuries in a grisly road accident along the busy Nairobi–Mombasa highway in Machakos county.

The accident, which was reported to Kyumbi police station as a fatal road traffic crash, involved three vehicles — two trailers and a pick-up.

The victims, occupants of two of the vehicles involved, died on the spot.

Athi River South Subcounty Police Commander David Kandie said the crash occurred at around 7.30am on Saturday at the Kapiti Plains area within Kyumbi traffic sub-base command.

According to police, the dead included one of the trailer drivers and a 25-year-old man who had been seated at the back of the pick-up.

Kandie said the accident involved a Mercedes Benz trailer, an Isuzu pick-up and another trailer all headed toward Mombasa.

He said the pick-up driver attempted to overtake the first trailer but cut in too soon after spotting the oncoming trailer.

In the process, the pick-up lost control and was struck by the oncoming vehicle, veering off the road and overturning on the left side of the highway.

The crash claimed the lives of the second trailer’s driver and a 25-year-old man seated at the back of the pick-up.

Three other occupants of the pick-up sustained injuries and were rushed to Machakos Level 5 Hospital.

They included a 35-year-old man and the driver, who both suffered bruises, a 25-year-old woman with leg injuries, and a two-year-old girl with bruises on both legs and eye pain.

The bodies were taken to the Machakos Level 5 Hospital mortuary, while the wreckage was towed to Kyumbi Police Station for inspection.

Kandie confirmed that investigations into the incident have been launched.
