Police in Garissa have recovered a stolen firearm and several other items during an operation in Madogo, Tana River, on Wednesday.
The raid, led by the Deputy Regional Criminal Investigations Officer for the North Eastern Region alongside officers from Madogo police station, followed intelligence on a robbery reported at Garissa police station on August 5.
A suspect was escorted to a home in Bula Kartasi Estate, where officers recovered a Glock pistol with 17 rounds of ammunition.
Also seized were a wallet containing the complainant’s national ID and his wife’s ID, a Kenya Police Service certificate of appointment, a military ID, a smock jacket, a police belt, and several swords, among other items.
The suspect is in custody pending arraignment.
Police commended the swift coordination of the operation and pledged continued efforts to safeguard public safety.
According to police sources, recent weeks have seen an increase in violent robberies and armed incidents across parts of Garissa and Tana River counties, with stolen firearms increasingly linked to criminal activity.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations attributed the trend to organised gangs exploiting porous borders and remote terrain to traffic weapons and stolen goods.
Authorities warned that such crimes not only endanger residents but also affect counter-terrorism and anti-banditry operations in the North-Eastern region.
Enhanced intelligence-led patrols, targeted raids, and inter-agency coordination have been prioritised to disrupt criminal networks before they escalate.
On Monday, 20 suspects were arrested following a targeted operation aimed at dismantling criminal gangs operating in the Soweto and Kasufini areas of Malindi, Kilifi County.
The operation was prompted by a rise in criminal incidents, including increased drug trafficking activities.
The National Police Service said it remains committed to safeguarding lives and property and will continue intelligence-led operations to disrupt criminal networks.
