In Summary

  • The union wants the university to pay its members the delayed June and July 2025 salaries at the negotiated 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement rates.
  • UASU is also demanding the implementation of the Return-To-Work Formula signed between the union and Moi University Council on November 30, 2024.

The Universities' Academic Staff Union (UASU) has issued a seven-day strike notice for lecturers at Moi University over delayed salaries.

The union on Wednesday said its members will down their tools, demanding that the university pay its members the delayed June and July 2025 salaries at the negotiated 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) rates.
UASU is also demanding the implementation of the Return-To-Work Formula signed between the union and Moi University Council on November 30, 2024.

“The university should also honour the clauses on review and promotion of staff and retirement age in the negotiated 2021-2025 National Collective Bargaining Agreement,” the notice reads.

The strike notice, signed by UASU Secretary General Constantine Wasonga, states they also want the university to honour and uphold workers' fundamental rights and freedoms under Article 41 and Chapter 4 of the Constitution of Kenya.

“Further, you are categorically and unequivocally informed that all UASU members at Moi University shall withdraw their labour and shall not resume duty until the Return-To-Work Formula is implemented fully,” part of the strike notice reads.

Wasonga said the strike would commence on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, if their demands are not met.
UASU has copied the strike notice to the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Professor Julius Ogamba, and all other relevant stakeholders.

The university has over 1,000 lecturers and has experienced relative stability since the appointment of the current acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kiplagat Kotut.

The institution has been facing financial challenges and has announced a redundancy plan to lay off over 2,000 workers due to financial distress.

UASU Moi University Chapter officials, led by Ojuki Nyabuta, said their efforts to have the university abide by signed CBAs had been futile.

“That’s why we have resorted to the strike decision so that our plea is heard,” Nyabuta said.

He said they had been patient with the university management, but the top managers had taken them for granted by failing to honour signed CBA deals.
