Mumias East MP Peter Salasya has stepped forward to recognise the exemplary performance of Harambee Stars goalkeeper Byrne Omondi during the ongoing 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Salasya has announced that he will cover Omondi’s house rent for three months.

His gesture comes in appreciation of the goalkeeper’s composure and crucial contributions to the team’s success so far in the tournament.

Salasya emphasised that his reward is uniquely reserved for Omondi, stating:

“I will reward Harambee Stars goalkeeper Bryne Omondi by covering his house rent for three months. He is very composed and knows his work. I will just gift the goalkeeper; the other players will be gifted by Ruto.”

Looking beyond the current tournament, Salasya outlined an ambitious vision for the future welfare of Harambee Stars players.

He vowed that, should he win the 2027 presidential election, every member of the national football team would receive binding contracts with retirement benefits of at least Sh70,000 per month and comprehensive medical packages.

He further promised starting salaries of Sh450,000 per player monthly, augmented by sponsorships from burgeoning manufacturing companies that he aims to attract under his leadership.

Salasya also drew a poignant parallel between Omondi and notable figures in Kenya’s football history, likening him to former Harambee Stars goalkeeper Francis Onyiso and legendary coach Reinhard Fabisch.

The MP’s reward comes as President William Ruto announced significant incentives to motivate the Harambee Stars ahead of the crucial group stage match against Zambia scheduled for Sunday, August 17.

The President announced a generous cash incentive of Sh2.5 million for each player and member of the technical bench if Kenya manages to secure a win in this decisive game.

Further rewards are on offer in the event the team advances beyond the quarter-finals, with promises of an additional Sh1 million cash bonus and a home under the Affordable Housing Programme for each team member.

The Harambee Stars are riding high on momentum after securing a landmark 1-0 victory over two-time champions Morocco in their third Group A match.

Omondi’s outstanding performance was instrumental in preserving the clean sheet, making several critical saves that thwarted Morocco’s attacks and helped keep the dream of progressing alive.
