President William Ruto has explained why he did not attend Harambee Stars’ sensational 1-0 victory over Morocco in the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The match was played at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday.

Speaking during a visit to the national team’s hotel, the President apologised for missing the historic game, saying a late return from official duties and security concerns influenced his decision to stay away.

“I apologise for not joining you yesterday because I came late from another assignment,” Ruto told the players.

“I was advised that if I arrived late at the venue, people might storm the stadium, and perhaps things would not turn out well.”

Earlier in the day, Ruto had attended a Sunday service at PCEA Joshua Matenjwa Memorial Church in Limuru, Kiambu County, before inspecting Affordable Housing Programme projects in the area.

Although absent from the stands, the President said he followed the match live on television and was impressed by the team’s performance.

“I watched the game, and you played superbly. It was as if you were used to playing with 10 men,” he remarked, commending the players’ discipline after midfielder Chrispine Erambo was sent off just before halftime.

Ryan Ogam, who netted the decisive goal in the 42nd minute, his first in international football, has since become a national hero, helping Kenya end Morocco’s 14-match unbeaten run in the tournament and keeping Harambee Stars firmly in the race for the quarter-finals.

Ruto said the victory reflected the collective effort of a nation determined to rise, praising the players for their “outstanding, phenomenal” commitment.

“You made Kenya proud. We started together,  I told you what you need to do, what other Kenyans need to do, and what I needed to do. I am happy that everyone is doing their part,” he said.

“This is Kenya’s time. This is our moment. We must do whatever it takes and make the necessary sacrifices.”
