Two people, including a woman and a minor, died after an ENA Coach bus was involved in a road accident on the night of Saturday, August 9, along the Mai Mahiu–Narok highway.

In a statement, the company said the bus, registration number KDE 279Q, was travelling from Nairobi to Kehancha with 47 passengers and three crew members when the crash occurred at around 11 p.m.

According to Ena Coach, the bus was descending the escarpment near the historical Catholic church when a truck lost its brakes, hit two vehicles ahead, and then rammed into the bus from behind. The impact caused the bus to veer off the road and overturn.

Several passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby hospitals by rescue teams from St. John Ambulance, police, and members of the public.

Most of the injured have since been treated, cleared, and discharged.

Ena Coach CEO Richard Mogire expressed condolences to the families of those who died and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

He said the company is cooperating fully with authorities investigating the incident and reaffirmed its commitment to passenger safety and exemplary service.

"Our hearts go out to the families and friends who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. We extend our deepest condolences and stand with you in this time of grief. To those injured, we offer our sincere wishes for a swift and complete recovery," Mogire said.

"We are fully cooperating with the relevant authorities as investigations and next steps unfold. We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to passenger safety and exemplary service.

Thank you to all who offered assistance during this difficult time. Together, we hope for healing, understanding, and continued safety on our roads."

This latest crash adds to a troubling history of deadly incidents on this stretch, often referred to by Kenyans as a "tarmac graveyard." The region’s steep inclines, sharp turns, and inadequate signage make it a frequent hotspot for accidents.

Vehicles struggling with mechanical failures—like tyre bursts or braking faults—often find little time to avoid disaster.

In December 2024, a similar tyre blowout triggered a devastating series of collisions involving an ENA Coach bus, resulting in seven fatalities and widespread damage.

Moreover, the Mai Mahiu corridor has seen other dramatic incidents—notably, in August 2023, another bus burst into flames after a punctured wheel caught fire.

Miraculously, all 48 passengers escaped unharmed, thanks to swift evacuation and a quick rescue bus deployment from the company.
