AMREF Flying Doctors has released the names and photos of the four members who perished in the August 7, 2025, Mwihoko aircraft crash, paying tribute to them as devoted professionals who served with excellence.
The victims were two crew members — Captain Muthuka Munuve and Captain Brian Kimani Miaro — and two medical personnel, Charles Mugo Njoroge and Jane Rispah Aluoch Omusula.
Capt. Munuve, who had served with AMREF Flying Doctors for six years and nine months, was a captain and check pilot qualified on both the Cessna Citation XLS and the Pilatus PC-12.
He had accumulated over 10,000 flight hours and was renowned for his calm precision, commitment to safety, and exceptional leadership.
Capt. Kimani had served three years and nine months as an instructor captain on the Pilatus PC-12 and was transitioning to become a check pilot.
With more than 5,800 flight hours, he was admired for his skill, professionalism, and dedication.
Njoroge, a medical doctor with seven years and eight months of service, brought healing and hope to patients in their most critical moments, leaving an enduring mark on those he treated.
Omusula served as an emergency flight nurse for four years and eight months, delivering lifesaving care with compassion, courage, and steadiness under pressure.
AMREF Flying Doctors CEO Stephen Gitau described the loss as “immense,” adding, “These were not just professionals; they were heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to humanity.”
The Cessna Citation XLS, tail number 5Y-FDM, had departed Wilson Airport bound for Hargeisa, Somalia, when it crashed minutes later into a residential building in Mwihoko, Kiambu County, killing all four on board and two people on the ground.
Aviation authorities are investigating the cause, as Amref continues to support the bereaved families.
The organisation has at the same time appealed to the residents who may have found the missing components of Flight Data Recorder (FDR) to return noting they are critical to the ongoing investigation.
