President William Ruto has praised Harambee Stars for their resilience and fighting spirit after they secured a crucial 1-1 draw against Angola.
The Stars earned the much-needed point in their second match of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) Tournament at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Thursday.
President Ruto took to social media shortly after the match, commending the team for their courage and determination.
“What a valiant display of skill and endurance by our gallant Harambee Stars! What you displayed this evening was not just football; it is the Kenyan spirit on show for Africa and the world. Courage. Grit. Patriotism.” Ruto said.
“Reduced to 10 men early in the game, you stood tall, fought hard, and covered every blade of grass... You have made us proud. Hongera vijana! Na nikona deni yenu vile tulikubaliana!”
The national team played over 70 minutes with 10 men following Marvin Nabwire’s red card in the 20th minute for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Midfielder Austin Odhiambo calmly converted a 12th-minute penalty, scoring the draw goal.
A dramatic ending saw Angola’s last-minute goal ruled out by VAR, preserving Kenya’s point at the top of the table with four points, following their opening 1-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo on Sunday, August 3.
Kenya will face Morocco on Sunday, August 10.
A win or draw could see them advance to the knockout rounds for the first time in CHAN history.
The tournament is being co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania under the theme CHAN PAMOJA 2024.
The CHAN tournament features national teams made up exclusively of players active in their country’s domestic leagues.
The President had promised to financially reward the national team for each victory in the CHAN tournament—a gesture aimed at boosting morale and recognising the players’ efforts in representing the country.
Ruto’s promises include Sh1 million to each member of the Harambee Stars delegation for every match won, and Sh500,000 for every draw at CHAN 2024.
In addition, the team will receive Sh60 million if they reach the quarterfinals, Sh70 million for a semifinal berth, and a whopping Sh600 million should they win the tournament.
