President William Ruto, alongside other leaders, joined mourners in celebrating the life of Phoebe Asiyo/PCS
In a show of unity, President Ruto was joined by Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and a host of other national and local leaders who paid tribute to the former Karachuonyo MP Asiyo.
Asiyo, who passed away on July 16, 2025, in North Carolina, USA, at the age of 90, was remembered as a distinguished stateswoman, a trailblazer and a maternal figure.
She served two terms as an MP for Karachuonyo constituency before settling into advocacy and women’s rights movements.
Born on September 12, 1932, Phoebe Asiyo was among the first women from Nyanza to be elected to Parliament, following the pioneering footsteps of Grace Onyango, who became Kenya’s first female MP in 1969.
