Residents of Avikunga in Shinyalu, Kakamega County, will now receive their treatment under a tree or tent, after their local dispensary was destroyed in a fire triggered by a gas explosion during ugali cooking on Wednesday.

According to police, the fire broke out inside the dispensary’s kitchen while a doctor was preparing lunch.

A gas cylinder reportedly exploded, sparking flames that quickly engulfed the facility.

Villagers rushed to the scene in an attempt to salvage medical equipment and supplies, but much of it was lost in the blaze.

Despite the setback, residents have called for continuity in healthcare services and have proposed that treatment continue under a tree near the ruins of the dispensary.

They also urged authorities to upgrade the facility to a higher level to better serve the community.

Speaking to NTV, one local resident warned against politicising the tragedy.

“Sitaki hii mambo ya moto kuchoma hii hospitali iingizwe siasa ndani mtu atuambie ‘mtanipea kura ndio nijenge’. Hapana,” he said.

This is loosely translated to: “I don't want this issue of the hospital burning down to be turned into politics, where someone tells us, 'Give me your vote and I'll rebuild it.' No”.

Another resident emphasised the dispensary’s importance, noting that it had served the community well for years.

County Executive Committee Member for Health Livingstone Imbayi assured residents that services would continue without interruption.

“We have agreed with the doctors that we will erect a tent for continued medical services,” he said.

What to do in case of a gas explosion

In the case that you find yourself in a gas explosion, Supergas advises you to immediately leave the area and ensure everyone is out of harm's way.

You should also alert others so they can evacuate as well. Then, you are advised to call for help from the fire department or gas supplier. Do so from a safe distance.

Supergas cautions against re-entering the building until emergency personnel declare it safe.

According to the College of Wooster, do not use elevators.

Additionally, do not move seriously injured persons unless they are in obvious immediate danger (of fire, building collapse).
