In a separate incident in Nairobi’s Githurai area, a private security guard was injured after a teargas canister he had in his possession exploded.

The guard, who works at a power substation in Roysambu but was off duty at the time, reportedly sustained serious injuries to his left hand.

Police said they responded to reports of an explosion near the Githurai Makuti area and found the guard in pain.

He told officers he had picked up the canister during the Saba Saba protests and kept it without knowing the potential danger.

The device is believed to have accidentally detonated. He was first treated at a nearby chemist before being referred to a hospital for further care.

Police recovered pieces of the exploded canister and are analysing them. Authorities have reiterated that private security guards are not permitted to possess or use teargas canisters.

There is growing concern that dozens of Kenyans may have picked up unexploded teargas shells after the recent anti-government protests. Officers are urging the public to surrender any such devices to avoid similar accidents.

The June 25 and July 7 demonstrations turned deadly, with more than 60 people reported killed and over 500 injured nationwide.

Police say around 1,500 suspects have since been charged in connection with the unrest.

Meanwhile, in Thika Town, police arrested two suspects in Makongeni on Thursday evening and recovered two rounds of ammunition from their apartment.

Authorities are investigating how the suspects obtained the ammunition and what their intentions were.
