The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has officially invited bids for the reconstruction of the Nithi Bridge, barely a day after President William Ruto pledged the procurement process would begin immediately.
In a public notice issued August 4, KeNHA confirmed that tender documents for the realignment of the bridge along the Makutano–Embu–Meru (A9) road will be available on the government’s electronic procurement portal (e-GP) starting August 11, 2025.
Also included in the notice is the planned rehabilitation and improvement of the Thika-Magumu (B20) road.
Interested contractors, consultants, and suppliers are required to register on the platform and bid for the works as advertised.
“All interested suppliers, contractors, consultants and service providers are required to register on the electronic government procurement (e-GP) system vide https://egpkenya.go.ke and bid for the tenders,” it reads.
The announcement comes hot on the heels of President Ruto’s directive during a meeting with leaders from Tharaka Nithi at State House, where he assured residents that the government was fast-tracking the long-overdue project.
He revealed that the design work had been completed and emphasised the urgency of fixing what he described as one of Kenya’s deadliest blackspots.
Built in the 1980s, the Nithi bridge has gained infamy for its steep gradient, sharp bends, and poor visibility, features that have contributed to multiple fatal accidents over the years.
The realignment project seeks to eliminate these hazards by straightening the road and improving safety features.
Ruto said the construction is set to be completed before the next general election.
He pegged the project cost at Sh7 billion, calling it a necessary investment to save lives and boost road safety in the region.
In April, Kenya secured funding for the project through a bilateral deal with China, following the President’s state visit to Beijing.
The Nithi bridge tender is part of KeNHA’s broader 2025/2026 procurement rollout, which will be conducted entirely through the e-GP system.
KeNHA has also urged all eligible suppliers, contractors, and service providers to register on the e-GP platform and keep checking for new opportunities.
This as it committed to full transparency and efficiency in the procurement process.
