Detectives are investigating a chilling murder in Kathekakai area, Machakos County, where a 23-year-old worker and two dogs were found dead in a suspected break-in and attack.
The victim, Emanuel Wafula, was discovered lying in a pool of blood at the gate of the compound he was guarding. According to police, the incident occurred on the night of Sunday, August 3.
Wafula had earlier alerted his employer that two of the compound’s dogs appeared to have been poisoned by unknown individuals.
He requested a veterinary officer to be sent urgently, unaware that the attackers were still within the premises.
While inspecting the compound to find out what had happened to the dogs, Wafula was ambushed and fatally attacked.
His employer, who was away at the time, later tried to reach him by phone but got no response.
Concerned, the employer called neighbours and relatives to check on him while he rushed from Machakos town to the home.
Upon arrival, he found Wafula’s body at the gate and rushed him to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The two dogs were also confirmed dead. Police say the house had been broken into, valuables stolen, and the CCTV system vandalised.
The digital video recorder (DVR) was taken, likely to erase evidence of the attackers.
Wafula’s body was taken to the mortuary for a postmortem. Police also plan to involve a veterinary pathologist to examine the dogs to confirm whether they were poisoned.
The motive behind the attack remains unclear, and a manhunt is underway for the suspects.
The incident comes amid a worrying rise in murder cases across the country. Police report that up to eight murder cases are recorded daily, with many still under investigation or in court.
