The government has unveiled an elaborate security and traffic management plan to ensure a safe and smooth experience for players, fans, and international visitors during the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has assured both Kenyans and the global community that Kenya is fully prepared to host the continental football tournament, particularly on the security front.
Speaking after a security inspection of Nyayo National Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Murkomen said comprehensive measures have been deployed across stadiums, hotels, roads, and key tourist sites.
“We want to assure the country that we have put in place elaborate measures to ensure visitors are received well at the airport. Security screenings will be conducted there, and all entry points will be closely monitored,” said the CS.
He emphasised that security efforts go well beyond match venues, with dedicated personnel and protocols in place to secure accommodation facilities and travel routes for the thousands of expected visitors.
Murkomen also highlighted significant upgrades to the host stadiums. Both Nyayo and Kasarani now feature modern access gates that require digital entry cards, which are expected to help control crowd flow and reduce the risk of stampedes.
“The entry systems are modern and efficient. We do not expect any stampedes,” he said. “We urge all fans to use official channels and ensure they have valid tickets before coming.”
In addition, CCTV surveillance systems have been installed to provide real-time monitoring and enhance response to any potential incidents around the stadiums.
To address anticipated congestion during match days, Nairobi County Traffic Police have rolled out an extensive traffic management plan, especially around the two main venues.
Key closures include: Aerodrome Road (from Madaraka Roundabout to Bunyala Roundabout), one side of Langata Road (Madaraka to Lusaka roundabouts) and one side of Mombasa Road (Lusaka to Bunyala roundabouts).
Alternative routes for motorists from Mombasa Road are Likoni–Enterprise Road or Southern Bypass.
Those from Langata Road can divert via Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road, while fans heading to Kasarani can use Ruaraka–Baba Dogo Road and Ngomongo Road.
Those from Thika Road can opt for Eastern Bypass, Kiambu Road, or Limuru Road.
Fans attending matches are urged to follow stadium regulations. The following items are strictly prohibited: Vuvuzelas, whistles, or other noise-making devices, food and drinks from outside (except for medical or infant-related needs), firearms, sharp objects, fireworks, offensive or political banners and large backpacks.
Kenya is set to host a blockbuster opening weekend as Harambee Stars face Democratic Republic of Congo at Kasarani Stadium at 3 PM.
Later, Morocco takes on Angola at Nyayo Stadium from 6 PM.
The CHAN 2024 tournament, reserved for players who compete in their national leagues, is expected to attract fans and scouts from across Africa and beyond.
In a broader appeal, Murkomen called on Kenyans to demonstrate their trademark hospitality.
“Even in any family, they say when visitors come, you must be at your best behaviour. Let us be courteous, help where needed, and showcase the Kenyan warmth and friendliness,” he said.
