Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has suggested that ODM secretary general and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is being prepared for a higher political position ahead of the 2027 General Election.
According to Salasya, Sifuna could be a strategic political figure supported by both Azimio leader Raila Odinga and President William Ruto, aimed at influencing the youth vote in the upcoming elections.
“Make no mistake. He is being groomed for a higher role in 2027, possibly as Ruto’s DP. It’s a high-level political move. Don’t buy into their narrative,” Salasya said.
He further claimed that Sifuna’s political messaging is calculated to influence public perception, particularly among younger voters.
Salasya's remarks follow recent comments by Sifuna, who said he would resign from his party position if ODM chooses to back Ruto in 2027.
The Nairobi Senator has publicly criticised the Kenya Kwanza administration, accusing it of not honouring key commitments, including a 10-point agenda under the reported working arrangement between UDA and ODM.
Sifuna had questioned the legitimacy of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) underpinning the deal, raising concerns over its implementation and transparency.
During a recent TV interview, Sifuna declared that the ODM–UDA pact was “dead,” citing ongoing police brutality and the recent death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang in police custody on June 8.
At the same time, Sifuna said he had received calls from the public urging him to step down if he no longer believes in the direction the party is taking.
“I have not yet resigned from the party as the SG because I still believe there is some glimmer of hope, and my party will eventually see the merger as untenable and return to defend and protect the people,” he said.
“If the party decides to go ahead with the merger in 2027, then I will have no option but to resign as the SG,” he added.
