Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is in Rwanda for a high-level visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation between Nairobi and Kigali, with a focus on youth empowerment, sports development, and innovation.

On Monday, Governor Sakaja held key meetings with Rwanda Development Board CEO Jean-Guy Afrika, Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire, and NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi.

The leaders explored areas of collaboration to unlock opportunities for young people in both cities.

“Our discussions focused on deepening collaboration between Nairobi and Kigali, especially around innovation, sports, and youth empowerment. Exciting opportunities ahead,” Governor Sakaja said in a statement.

He also paid a courtesy call to President Paul Kagame and later thanked the Rwandan leader for his vision and commitment to African development.

“It has been a pleasure to experience Rwanda at its depths. Much regard to H.E. President Kagame for his belief in the spirit, talent, and diversity that is Africa. A fruitful conversation we had that will yield,” Sakaja noted.

The Governor further commended Masai Ujiri — President of the Toronto Raptors and founder of Giants of Africa — for his efforts in nurturing young talent across the continent.

“To the Giants of Africa, something good is coming,” Sakaja hinted, suggesting upcoming initiatives that will connect African cities through innovation and sports.

The Nairobi County Government is currently implementing a sports infrastructure program, which includes upgrades to existing facilities like Joe Kadenge Stadium and the construction of new ones in Woodley, Kihumbuini, and Mwiki.

Dandora Stadium has emerged as a weekend football hub, drawing crowds that have created economic activity for youth in transport, vending, and other small businesses.

The stadium is also contributing to the revival of the city’s sporting culture.

Governor Sakaja’s visit reflects Nairobi’s broader goal of positioning itself as a leading city in Africa for youth innovation, urban sports, and city-to-city collaboration.
