Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja is
in Rwanda for a high-level visit aimed at strengthening bilateral cooperation
between Nairobi and Kigali, with a focus on youth empowerment, sports
development, and innovation.
On Monday, Governor Sakaja held key meetings with Rwanda Development Board CEO Jean-Guy Afrika, Minister of Sports Nelly Mukazayire, and NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi.
The leaders explored areas
of collaboration to unlock opportunities for young people in both cities.
“Our discussions focused on
deepening collaboration between Nairobi and Kigali, especially around
innovation, sports, and youth empowerment. Exciting opportunities ahead,”
Governor Sakaja said in a statement.
He also paid a courtesy call to
President Paul Kagame and later thanked the Rwandan leader for his vision and
commitment to African development.
“It has been a pleasure to
experience Rwanda at its depths. Much regard to H.E. President Kagame for his
belief in the spirit, talent, and diversity that is Africa. A fruitful
conversation we had that will yield,” Sakaja noted.

The Governor further commended Masai
Ujiri — President of the Toronto Raptors and founder of Giants of Africa — for
his efforts in nurturing young talent across the continent.
“To the Giants of Africa, something
good is coming,” Sakaja hinted, suggesting upcoming initiatives that will
connect African cities through innovation and sports.
The Nairobi County Government is
currently implementing a sports infrastructure program, which includes upgrades
to existing facilities like Joe Kadenge Stadium and the construction of new
ones in Woodley, Kihumbuini, and Mwiki.

Dandora Stadium has emerged as a
weekend football hub, drawing crowds that have created economic activity for
youth in transport, vending, and other small businesses.
The stadium is also contributing to
the revival of the city’s sporting culture.
Governor Sakaja’s visit reflects
Nairobi’s broader goal of positioning itself as a leading city in Africa for
youth innovation, urban sports, and city-to-city collaboration.
