Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has underscored the importance of close cooperation between the National and County Governments, saying it is essential for accelerating development and improving service delivery across Kenya.
Speaking on Monday July 28, 2025, at the County Commissioner’s Office in Kitale, Murkomen highlighted the strategic significance of Trans Nzoia in food production and regional stability, adding that a united approach was necessary to realise the country's growth ambitions.
“Trans Nzoia plays a critical role in food security. The government is committed to ensuring markets remain open and accessible to support our farmers and local traders,” he said.
He also addressed the long-standing issue of land disputes in the county, blaming the illegal occupation of public land for many of the problems.
Murkomen assured residents that grabbed parcels would be recovered and returned to the rightful owners.
Turning to security matters, the CS expressed concern about the increasing levels of alcohol and drug abuse in the region, partly linked to the smuggling of contraband through porous border points.
He did not mince his words about the involvement of some security officers in the illegal trade.
“Security officers are aiding these illegal activities, and I am warning that action will be taken against anyone involved,” he stated.
Murkomen also condemned the rise of criminal gangs in the region, particularly those being used by political players to interfere with public events.
He urged elected leaders to take a firm stand and support law enforcement in disbanding such groups.
“I want to urge elected leaders to work closely with law enforcement and county officials to dismantle such groups and uphold peace and order in the region,” he said.
The CS was in Trans Nzoia as part of his 22nd Jukwaa La Usalama grassroots engagement tour.
During the visit, he met with the county security team and inspected registration services at the ACC Central Division in Saboti Sub-County.
He also paid a courtesy call on Governor George Natembeya before interacting with members of the public, local leaders, civil society groups, and security personnel at the County Commissioner’s residence.
Murkomen was accompanied by Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service Gilbert Masengeli, Regional Police Commander Jasper Ombati, Regional Administration Police Commander John Amadadi, and other senior government officials.
