The Ministry of Tourism, through the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), has launched a National Youth Empowerment programme.

The program is designed to engage young people in constructive, intellectually stimulating activities that nurture creativity and problem-solving.

As part of this initiative, KICC has introduced bi-monthly chess tournaments at the Centre, creating a regular platform for the youth to interact, learn, and compete in a mentally engaging environment.

The first edition was held on Friday and attracted dozens of young participants eager to sharpen their strategic thinking skills.

The launch comes on the heels of another milestone event earlier this month, the National AI Hackathon, which was unveiled by the Ministry to identify AI powered solutions for tourism, conservation, and the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) sector.

Both initiatives underscore the government’s commitment to harnessing innovation and technology as tools for youth empowerment and sustainable development.

“These programmes align with Kenya’s broader Digital Transformation and Climate Resilience Agenda, which positions Artificial Intelligence and creative technologies at the core of national development,” the KICC Chief Executive Officer James Mwaura said.

The introduction of chess tournaments also forms part of KICC’s wider strategic goal to reposition the Centre as a dynamic and versatile venue, capable of hosting diverse, contemporary events that go beyond traditional MICE offerings.

Speaking during the launch, Mwaura affirmed the Centre’s vision.

“KICC is proud to be part of a transformative journey that will shape the future of Kenya’s youth. Through platforms like these, we are not only building intellectual capacity but also reaffirming KICC as a hub for innovation, creativity, and national development,” he said.

The bi-monthly chess series will be open to both the young and the youth with additional mentorship, training, and prizes provided in partnership with key stakeholders.

In March, KICC begun installing state-of-the-art dancing fountains to improve guests' experience and promote tourist activity in the area due to the different ambiance.

The dancing fountains are set to synchronise with different types of music genres tailored for specific events, themes, or corporate branding.

“This attraction will not only captivate visitors but also serve as a unique focal point for International and local events, gala dinners, trade shows, and entertainment productions. It adds a dynamic visual and sensory element that sets Kenya apart from the competition,” KICC CEO Mwaura said.

Furthermore, the centre can host family extravaganzas and other thematic events every weekend.

The introduction of the fountains underscored the corporation’s mission to always provide quality amenities for potential guests and clients.

Additionally, they also focus on business as they are developing two more products to make the Centre a conducive business ground.

The feature is expected to be a major draw for business events, offering delegates an innovative way to create engaging experiences while at the Centre.
