Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has said that he will sacrifice his presidential ambition if the system agreed upon by the opposition to pick a candidate for 2027 does not favour him.
Speaking in the United States of America, where he is currently mobilising for support and opening satellite offices for his new party, Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), Gachagua said that he is one of the individuals seeking to fly the opposition’s flag in the 2027 presidential elections.
He went on to say that he has the best chance to become president among all contenders, but is also ready to back anyone the opposition will agree on.
“I am a front runner and I think I have the best chances to be President, but I want to give you a commitment that if the formula does favour me to send Ruto home, I will sacrifice my ambition to support whoever the system favours,” Gachagua said.
He went on to say that at the moment, the opposition has not settled on anyone as the flag bearer for 2027.
The former DP said that at the right time, they will have that conversation, and the people will be made aware who their candidate is.
“We have not settled on anybody. There's only one thing that we have agreed on, and it's one term, as for who will replace him (William Ruto), not yet, but Kenyans say they do not care who; they want him out. As for who will be the flagbearer, at the right time we will discuss.”
Gachagua noted that the government is big enough to accommodate everyone, but they must first come up with a system that will enhance good governance.
He added that the formula must also fight corruption and bring to an end extrajudicial killings and abductions in the country.
“Government is huge, there’s space for everybody and we will agree who takes what position, provided we come up with a good formula to create good governance and fight corruption, killings and abductions.”
The former DP further rubbished a report that claimed the opposition has settled on former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i as their 2027 presidential flagbearer.
Gachagua claimed it is a creation of a security state agency aimed at dividing the united opposition.
