Former Chief Justice David Maraga has declared his readiness to face critics following his earlier announcement to run for the presidency in 2027.

Speaking during an interview with K24  on Monday, Maraga said he is aware of the challenges that lie ahead.

“This is a murky environment. People will do all manner of things, and in my view, that is the price we must pay to reset this country to where it is supposed to be. I am willing to pay it,” he said.

Maraga described the opportunity to serve as president as the greatest privilege Kenyans could offer him.

“If I can succeed and reset this country, that would be the greatest privilege the Kenyan people would have given me. I promise Kenyans that I will not let them down,” he said.

He also vowed to avoid engaging in verbal attacks if elected, saying he would address issues constructively.

“Those attacks are often meant to cover someone’s weaknesses. Instead of focusing on what a leader can deliver, they are insulted. We want to change that so leaders understand they are serving the people,” Maraga said.

His intention to run for the presidency became public on July 16, 2025.

Maraga said the decision was driven by the state of the country and a desire to bring change.

“This has come as a result of what has been happening in the country. Seeing our young people being treated the way they have been is extremely worrying,” he said during the interview on NTV.

Maraga added that the decision followed consultations with friends and other stakeholders, alongside deep personal reflection.

“After discussions with friends and others, and after serious reflection, I thought it was time we rethink the leadership of this country. We cannot let some people throw our country to the dogs,” he said.

“It is as a result of that reflection that I have made up my mind to run for the presidency in 2027.”
